RYA VHF (SRC) Course | Maidstone | Kent

About the course The RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certificate (SRC) is the minimum qualification required to operate marine VHF radio equipment on a UK flagged vessel. This includes both fixed and handheld equipment with and without Digital Selective Calling (DSC). The Classroom The classroom will comfortably accommodate six students as a maximum, the classroom has Wi-Fi, white board, 40” monitor for slide presentations. It also has heating and tea​/​coffee making facilities. VHF​/​SRC GMDSS SHOREBASED COURSE Before the course Before attending the course, you will need to pay the RYA the exam and license fee. Their preferred method is to do this online. They will then email you the exam application form, make sure that you print this and bring it with you on the day. Course content Operation of the VHF radio including the DSC, the correct VHF channels (frequencies) to be used for each type of communication, mayday, distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures, ship to shore communications, Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB), Search and Rescue Transponders (SART). Ability after the course To be able to confidently operate a class D VHF radio to its full potential. Previous experience or knowledge None required, however you will be required to have completed 4 hours reading in preparation before attending the course. Recommended topics are at the foot of this information sheet. Age limit 18 Course structure The course will start at 0830. There will be a 15-minute break mid-morning and a 45-minute lunch break. The Assessor will arrive at 16:30 for the exams. There is a written theory exam and a practical assessment in the use of Marine VHF DSC radios. 7 hours classroom and 3 hours pre-course reading. What to bring with you, The printed SRC Exam Application Form. The VHF Handbook For all courses a notebook, pencil, rubber and sharpener. A passport photo with your name printed on the back. Recommended topics to study ahead of the course Call types; routine, distress, urgency and safety. Calling procedures and content for voice and DSC calls. Rules and regulations. The phonetic alphabet. GMDSS compliance and equipment. Limitations on available channels.

Meeting Point/Location

The course will be run from the First 4 Boat Training classroom in Allington Marina, Castle Road, Allington, Maidstone, ME16 0NH. The marina has a private road leading to a gated entrance, the classroom is on the first floor accessed by wide metal stairs. The marina has toilets and showers on site. If you have difficulty climbing approximately 10 stairs, please advise me immediately.
